Calvin Klein. Though I have been known to woo over some of the designer label's pieces in the past, this is not one of those times. This first Calvin Klein showing was for the men's Fall / Winter 2012 collection, and let me say that it was quiet a let down. Now, you might just think I'm saying that because I'm a female and therefore menswear could never quiet fascinate me the way womenswear does, but you would be mistaken, for the most part, I find menswear equally as, if not at times more, fascinating as womenswear and can assure you this collection was completely sub-par.
For the most part, I look for menswear collections that will make a man look attractive and sophisticated. Since the restrictions on male models are not nearly as strict or limiting as those put on female models, I always feel that the models themselves are good indicators on how the collection will look on the "everyday man" (as opposed to womenswear collections, as they are shown on women who are of an extreme height and low weight, which is very extreme as compared to the average size of the adult female, in other words, real men are more likely to be about the same size as male models, though perhaps not as buff).
This collection, I found, was modeled by a group of men who all had three things in common: they were extremely pale, except of course for those men who were of color - think Edward Cullen from Twilight, very pale - they all walked slightly slumped over (in other words, had poor posture) while walking in a hastened manner and they all looked extremely constipated (which may explain the hastened walking). Now, I'm sure this was probably at the direction of one of the show's directors (they couldn't have all really been constipated, could they?), probably telling the men to look "serious" - it didn't work.
Enough with the models for now though (I really only mention it because I found it quite distracting for the actual show, and had to review the show several times to complete my notes). As for the collection itself, I found it to be a cluttered mess of very baggy clothing - even baggy by menswear standards.
I believe that the idea of wearing clothing that fits properly is just a proper for menswear as it is for womenswear, and I believe that this was a very low point in the upcoming season's collection. The best example I can give of this is in the coats and the pants.
The coats were very baggy, looking as if two or three models could fit into one coat at the time. And while I don't believe the men's coats should be extremely tight - certainly not as tight as some women's coats are made - but I still believe you should at least be able to assure yourself by looking that only one person is in the coat, instead of having it look as if an entire army may be hiding inside with you!
The pants are my other complaint. Now, it's not that the didn't look good - I honestly think that in a great deal of outfits, the pants were actually the highlight for me - but it's the fact that on some of the models, they just didn't fit correctly. For some reasons, especially towards the beginning of the show, the seat of the pants (a.k.a. the butt) seemed very bagged and seemed to group very awkwardly, in some cases giving the models a minor wedgy.
Now, I can't completely diss on the entire collection, because there were some high points. While other sources call the collection "sporty" I actually found it to be a tad more vintage-inspired. There were some great jackets that just made my day (and helped recover the collection from being a total loss), such examples were the tan and gray bomber jackets - they were very well crafted, and something I would love to see my man in.
Overall, this collection is not something that I would like as a whole, however I found the bits and pieces of it were tolerable. For the most part, however, the collection wasn't may favorite - I tend to like more casual things from CK, and hope to see a better show in the fall.
What did you think of this collection? Was I too harsh, or do you agree?
