The Angkor Golf Resort is set to host the inaugural Handa-Faldo Cambodian Classic on March 14 to 17, a move that reflects the growing golfing status of Siem Reap.
Ranked as one of the world’s 1,000 best golfing facilities, the Angkor Golf Resort has been designed by former world number one Nick Faldo, who is also the main patron for the new US$300,000 event.
“The entire team at the resort is very excited and deeply honored to host this event. We feel by staging an Asian Tour event we will be raising AGR’s profile in the international golf community,” said Adam Robertson, general manager of the resort, in an exclusive interview with the Post.
“Considering the decision to host the event was confirmed on February 9, we have not done much to change or prepare what is already in the eyes of the Asian Tour a beautiful and true championship course. The only request from the Asian Tour was to grow the rough.”
The resort will add some tents for the event, but the structure of the clubhouse and the existing facilities will not be changed.
“The Asian Tour is very well organised when it comes to events like these. So much of the burden falls on them. However, so long as we ensure the course is in top condition and the weather remains dry, we are in for an exciting tournament,” he added.
The course is designed to test golfers at all levels – the basic element in Faldo’s design – ensuring creativity in players’ shot making and decision process.
