Preview Jónsi’s Score for Cameron Crowe’s ‘We Bought a Zoo’

Last week we featured Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ six track sampler for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. A lot of it is what you’ve come to expect from the two that won the Academy for Best Score last year, and are expected to do that again with this soundtrack. Now we got a preview of Jónsi’s score for Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo. Tomorrow will be your chance to catch a sneak preview of the movie before it hits theaters on December 23.

But if you want to own the soundtrack for We Bought a Zoo, the album itself goes on sale on December 13. More than plenty of time to make a decision on making the purchase, but if you are a fan of Jonsi’s work, then this is probably a must buy for you.

Hopefully I will be able to watch the movie tomorrow, and catch the score before it goes on sale. But having listen to the preview above, I am sure I will add it to my soundtrack library. Early on it was obvious that [Sigur Rós'] music would have a profound effect on the making of We Bought a Zoo,” says Crowe. “We gave all the actors and crew members a copy of Sigur Rós’ transcendent documentary, Heima.” And he adds that “the actors listened to the music during their takes; it quickly became part of the film’s DNA,” which is why they knew they had to choose Jónsi and use his music for this.

Based on this preview, I really think I will be buying this soundtrack. I absolutely love the sweet sounds of Jonsi’s work. There is a sense of warmth and love in this trailer, which will no doubt be evident in We Bought a Zoo.

When the director finally sent Jónsi the script and a video of one of the scenes, “[t]he story affected him,” said Crowe. “He’d already begun composing new music for the film when he arrived from Iceland with his toy sampler keyboard and a headful of ideas.” Let us know what you think of the results of their collaboration.
