Ford workers approved a cost-cutting agreement with management that includes shutting down a manufacturing plants in Canada in 2011, a move that will cut 1,500 jobs, the Canadian Auto Workers union said. "No one should mistake workers' approval as satisfaction with the new agreement," CAW President Ken Lewenza said after the agreement passed with 83 percent of the vote. The head of the Canadian Auto Workers says the union has reached a deal with Ford Canada that will see the auto company close one of its Ontario plants employing 1,600 workers, but it will add two new vehicles to its assembly line at another Ontario plant. Ken Lewenza said Friday that Ford's engine plant near Windsor, Ontario, will also get additional work over the life of the new contract that will expire in 2012. Nearly two-thirds of union workers at a Canadian auto plant jointly owned by General Motors and Suzuki have approved a new contract that would freeze wages and pensions, trim benefits, introduce a monthly health care contribution and reduce break times. The Canadian Auto Workers president says the union is confident Chrysler Corp. will excel after discussing the company's future during a lengthy meeting. Ken Lewenza said Friday that Chrysler Group LLC CEO Sergio Marchionne gave the union an update of what he has undertaken during his past 120 days as the new president during a meeting Thursday evening at Chrysler headquarters in Auburn Hills, Mich. Ford Motor Co.'s Canadian division and the Canadian Auto Workers union began labor talks on Tuesday after the union made substantial concessions to both General Motors and Chrysler earlier this year. Ford asked the CAW to reopen its current labor contract, which doesn't expire until 2011.
