March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. I heard that at age 50, everyone should get checked for colon cancer. My insurance didn't cover it then. At 59, I asked specifically to be referred by my doctor and I got a referral and a colonoscopy. My insurance covered it this time and I understand about 90 percent of the insurance companies cover a colon cancer check now. I'm told that not all doctors require a referral. Some do.
