The 62nd Cannes Film Festival got underway on Wednesday 13 May and will be running until 24 May. A bit of an A List magnet and a major event in the film industry calendar, this in film circles is regarded by most as the biggest film festival. It’s in effect a film festival and film competition with the prestigious Palm D’Or award going to the Best Film and Best director amongst other categories which will be announced on May 24.

No animated pic has ever opened Cannes Film Festival before but at the opening ceremony of the 62nd edition of the fest on May 13, 2009 animated 3D comedy “ Up ” directed by Pete Docter will have its world premiere.

PARIS - Johnnie To's new thriller, a wartime saga by Quentin Tarantino and a trip to Woodstock with Ang Lee are competing for the top prize at this year's Cannes film festival, organisers said Thursday.
Asian and European heavyweights, from New Zealand's Jane Campion to Spain's Pedro Almodovar, dominate the list of 20 movies competing for the coveted Palme d'Or at the Riviera festival running from May 13 to May 24.
