"The best camera I've ever owned" 2009-10-18By
Eileen Herman (Dana Point, CA)
This camera is spectacular! It is so easy to use, takes the absolute best pictures and it's super fun to use. I've read people complaining about the lens cap, it clicks on fine, no problems. The flash works great, if you want more light in low light conditions, buy another flash. The fact that I can record video and then take pictures and zoom in while recording is terrific, I've used that a lot. My favorite camera, I LOVE IT!!
"Not bad, but not perfect either" 2009-10-17By

My personal experience with this camera shows that it is an overall good product (Made in Japan, BTW), but it has plenty of room for improvement.
My biggest complaint in the camera's unfortunate tendency to over compress the JPEG images. Very unfortunate. There is no "Super Fine" mode there, so the full resolution images are never larger than 4MB each with an average of 3MB.
Many people reported that this camera tends to add blurriness and noise to the pictures. I believe that these artifacts all come from too much JPEG compression. E-mail Canon to fix this in their firmware updates!
Another bad thing has to do with the lens lacking any thread for light filters. There is a way of using filters, but you would have to buy an adapter ring for that. I mean, why shouldn't an SLR-like camera be suited for light filters?
I would recommend this camera to any advanced amateur photographer, but only if the camera would not over compress the images or if it had support for the TIFF format.
"Very Nice Super Zoom" 2009-10-16By

So far I am very pleased with this purchase. The only issue I have with the camera is the lens cap. No attachment, easy to loose.
Other than that, it appears to be a very good camera.
Thanks!
"An Excellent Choice" 2009-10-15By

After a lot of research I settled on this camera and I'm glad I did. I found some excellent professional reviews and some user experiences (youtube).
When I received the camera I spent some time with the manual. Well, there isn't a printed manual so I printed it first. By the way, Manuals4All will print and spiral bind a 5 1/4 x 8 1/2 manual for you for about $17. Your local Kinkos may do the same thing.
I don't know why some people are having trouble with sharpness. I suspect user error because I've been more than pleased with the pictures. If you're new to a camera that allows you to control your shot, and this camera is a definite step-up from a no-frills point and shoot, you should train yourself a bit. Yes, read the manual but you should also search for tips/tricks on how to set the camera for various shots. The Internet is full of information and there are some good books available.
I was disappointed that the SX20's lens didn't allow you to attach a filter. I take a lot of outdoor pictures and I love using a polarizing filter. I almost sent it back because of this. However, Lensmate sells an adapter that allows you to attach 58mm filters and it works very well. But, if you attach the Lensmate adapter you'll need a new lens cap and you'll have to take it off if you want to use the Canon hood that came with the camera (or attach a screw-in hood to the adapter). The adapter is $18 and available online at Lensmate's website.
Bottom line - you won't be disappointed. This camera has most of the features you'll find on a dSLR (except for lens options) at a decent price.
"SX20IS Delivers - Almost" 2009-10-12By

This is my first Canon product. Overall I am very pleased. I purchased early September 2009 just before a trip to the northwest including Victoria British Columbia. Comments from friends and family after seeing the pictures of whales, harbors, city lights, volcanic mountain peaks, and sunsets on the Oregon coast support the quality of the camera and the ability of an average photographer when coupled with a good camera. I do wish Canon would provide accessories to include U/V Clear Filter to offer basic lens protection, polarized filters to remove the sun reflection from my whale pictures (this would have doubled the quality of the pictures), and lens cap lanyard. Oh, a printed Users Guide sure would be nice. I ended up printing a dozen key pages from the installation disk to carry in the camera bag, a bulky alternative. I would buy the camera again.
