A debate is raging in the U.S. Congress about appropriate fuel economy standards for new vehicles. Environmentalists are lobbying Congress to mandate more efficient vehicles to reduce dependence on oil and reduce off-gassing and emisions. The Automobile Lobbies are resisting changes to the fuel economy standards in order to reduce costs and keep new car sales up.
