This article in the NY Times fits nicely with my belief that carbon offsets are bullshit. "The carbon offset has become this magic pill, a kind of get-out-of-jail-free card," Justin Francis, the managing director of Responsible Travel, one of the world's largest green travel companies to embrace environmental sustainability, said in an interview. "It's seductive to the consumer who says, 'It's $4 and I'm carbon-neutral, so I can fly all I...

LONDON (Reuters) - A dual system of both national emissions caps and carbon trading schemes should play a central role in cutting global greenhouse gas emissions, a report commissioned by the British government said on Monday. At the government level, national caps on emissions should ensure countries take responsibility for limiting their own greenhouse gases. At the individual emitter level, trading schemes should cap emissions and allow trade in carbon permits, the report said. "The current framework for international carbon trading needs reform," said Mark Lazarowicz, the Prime Minister's representative for global carbon trading. A single global emissions trading scheme would reduce governments' autonomy ... Read Full Story
SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia's grain production stands to get a boost following changes to the country's proposed carbon-emissions trading scheme announced at the weekend. Industry officials said on Monday the decision to exclude agricultural emissions from the scheme and to possibly allow farmers to earn carbon credits through better land-management practices would enhance production of crops such as wheat. "Farmers are good carbon managers and it is in their interests to put carbon back in the soil where it belongs, as it means better water storage, improved crop and pasture growth," said David Crombie, president of the National Farmers Federation. Australia's emissions-trading scheme has ... Read Full Story

However, many states and corporations have committed to cutting GHG through emissions trading. Carbon emission credits are a key component of national and international emissions trading schemes that have been implemented to mitigate global warming. ... Read Full Story

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Austria is performing worse than any other major European economy in cutting emissions of climate-warming gases, European Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas said on Thursday. But 15 long-standing EU member states are on track to outperform their combined target of cutting carbon dioxide by 8 percent under the United Nations' Kyoto Protocol. "Austria is the one country that according to projections will not achieve its individual target," Dimas told reporters. "The government needs to take the additional measures necessary to bring emissions down." Austria will overshoot its Kyoto target by 12.9 percent even if it uses all the carbon offsetting mechanisms available, ... Read Full Story
