Growing Popularity Of Celebrity Poker Tournaments
Being an avid poker player, you must have known how exhilarating it is to watch your favorite poker players wrestle each other in poker games. There must be some quintessential moves by your favorite poker player which you must have recognized over the time and how exciting would it be to watch it over and over again! Besides, you must have picked up a few poker strategies by merely watching the shows.
These are just few of the many reasons which have given a tremendous boost to celebrity poker tournaments on television. The show by the name, “Celebrity Poker Showdown” was aired on Bravo sometime back and became immensely popular because of its concept which involved celebrity poker players playing poker games on television to win money for charity. Bravo aired a series of tournaments in this show and then put a stop to it. On the other hand, the total of five seasons for which the show was running turned out to be an immediate success amidst all the poker fans who were trying to look for some lessons to win a seat in the WSOP event by winning some online poker game.
The “Celebrity Poker Showdown” began with five players and initially five poker games were played and the winner of each game was given a silver poker chip as a memento to their participation in that show. Then the big game- final poker tournament was played between the players who were winners in the previous five poker games.
The action and the excitement level in the show was very much like the World Series of Poker event where players are eliminated through a series of rounds to shortlist players for the final table. The card game that was played on the show was Texas Hold’em and the stakes went as high as millions of dollars.
The seven tournaments of the show were filmed at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas before a live studio audience and after that, the Harrah’s Entertainment became the “official casino of Celebrity Poker Showdown.” Whichever player lost the game had to retreat to the “Loser’s Lounge” to watch the rest of the show.
Celebrities from all fields and arenas of life (stars like Don Cheadle, Ben Affleck and Jason Alexander and sport stars like Dennis Rodman) participated in the series with an aim to win huge amounts for charity purposes.
Sadly, Bravo closed down the show after eight tournaments and decided not to take it further. The last tournament of the show, played at Harrah’s in New Orleans was aimed at helping Katrina Hurricane victims.
Such celebrity poker shows were not only promoting a noble cause but were also enjoyed and watched by a plethora of people from different walks of life. It not only gave a tremendous boost to the game but also popularised poker as a spectator sport.
