Mayan Mystique Drawing Tourists to Mexico

Interest in the Mayan calendar and its prophecies is drawing travelers from around the world to the destinations of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, including Cancun, the Riviera Maya, MeridaCampeche, Tabasco and Chiapas.  These locations are renowned for their incredible archaeological sites, such as Chichen Itza, Palenque and Coba, and for having some of the world's most spectacular beaches - a natural draw for the attendees of any meeting or event.

The PGA Tour will land in the "Mundo Maya" February 22-26, for the Mayakoba Golf Classic, held each year in the Mayakoba Resort in the Riviera Maya, at the Greg Norman-designed El Camaleon course.

Federal and State governments will be investing nearly $10 million USD to promote the area with international tourists. Mexico's southeast, where the Mayan-related destinations are located, receives 30% of the country's total tourists.

With an unbeatable combination of beaches, culture and infrastructure, Mexico has become a favorite destination for vacationers and events professionals alike. No surprise, then, that the country is forecasting a record tourism year for 2012.

"Mexico's tourism industry is undergoing a stunning transformation - based on a bold strategy of diversification -- focused on promoting a broader range of tourism products (i.e. cultural tourism, adventure travel and health related-tourism) aimed at attracting a new breed of global consumer, " said Mexico Tourism Board CEO  Rodolfo Lopez-Negrete.  Investment in the meetings industry, worth a whopping $18.1 billion USD per year, is a key part of the country's strategy.

2011 year-end data bodes well for a robust 2012, with Mexico's Secretary of Tourism reporting that air arrivals for December were up 11% over the same period in 2010.
