Carl Crawford and the Tampa Bay Rays couldn’t agree on anything apparently, so they’ve halted their contract talks. This is supposed to mean that a new deal will have to wait until after the season. The Rays don’t comment on contract negotiations, but if they can’t get this thing done then you have to wonder:
A. If Carl and Tampa can’t come to an agreement–who can’t along with who? There’s some kind of tension there. I know Carl’s a great player and the Rays’ Executive Vice President texted the 4-letter network–“As we’ve said repeatedly, we are excited about having C.C. for the ‘10 season and potentially beyond.”–but that doesn’t mean he isn’t trade-bait now.
B. Imagine what they could get for him in a late trade with a desperate team. This could be the “Pau for Kwame” trade of the MLB. Think about it. Some dumbass team like the Braves is dying for a bat and they decide they’ll go straight-up “Tommy Hanson for Carl Crawford” or “Jair Jurrjens for Carl Crawford”…yes, I think Frank Wren is that dumb. The Rays could make a killing on this!
C. They have other good players. “C.C. is not the only dude on this team.
and
D. Now his teammates and Carl have to answer the questions for the first half of the season. It may not balloon into a MAJOR distraction, but it might be nagging because the Rays may not have much else going on. It’s one thing when everyone is on top of you because you play in New York or Boston, but in Tampa it’s kinda “sleepy” and the team SHOULD be pretty good.
However, if it gets intense at the end of the season you can bet that at least ONE PERSONB will keep asking “What about your contract Carl?”.
That’s not good for the Rays. They need to make a killing on the trade-market before it’s too late.
