NASCAR demanded drivers be on their best behavior at Talladega Superspeedway, where a ban on bump-drafting sanitized what's usually one of the most spectacular races of the season. In the end, chaos reigned, just like always. After 450 miles of what resembled a slow Sunday drive, the action picked up and the outcome was much of what everyone has come to expect out of Talladega: An unlikely winner, two spectacular crashes and an army of drivers frustrated about the unpredictability of restrictor-plate racing. "I think we all know that's what's going to happen when we come to Talladega," said Jeff Gordon, who first ran ... Read Full Story

Jimmie Johnson last started from the pole at Talladega Superspeedway in 2002, as the points leader, lined up next to Mark Martin. He didn't even make it to the first lap. The two cars skidded into the infield grass, Johnson suffered damage to the front of his Chevrolet, and had dropped to the back of the field when the race began. "Did you bring that same steering box back?" Jeff Gordon asked Martin on Saturday after rain washed out ... Read Full Story

Newman was in the middle of a pack hurtling down the backstretch at the massive 2.66-mile tri-oval when he bumped into teammate Tony Stewart. Newman's No. 39 Stewart-Haas Chevrolet was then nudged by Marcos Ambrose, and Newman veered inside before flipping into the air and landing on the hood of Kevin Harvick's car. Newman rolled over before coming to a rest upside down on the grass. He was alert following the accident. Emergency crews had to cut the roof off to extricate him. The wreck came a ... NASCAR will not permit bump-drafting through the corners at Talladega Superspeedway, even on the final laps in an attempt to win Sunday's race. The stern warning was delivered during the traditional pre-race driver meeting by Mike Helton, and several competitors immediately began to pepper him with questions. Juan Pablo Montoya was the most outspoken driver during the meeting, and he asked Helton if a driver will be stripped of a win if they bump-draft their way to victory. Helton said yes. Bump-drafting is the act of pushing another car around the track, and NASCAR is no longer tolerating it through the corners as a ... Read Full Story
