Mikkel Kessler v Carl Froch Result
Verdict: Kessler wins by unanimous decision.
2257: Fairly long wait for the scorecards – which does suggest this one is pretty close. The fighters embrace as we await the verdict.
Round 12: Out for the last and they touch gloves in centre ring as the crowd go nuts. Big chants of “Kessler” but will that be enough to carry him over the finishing line? How will the judges score this one? Froch again holds his hands low and eats a right but the ‘Cobra’ digs in and lands a left counter. Now a big right from Carl fails to land flush before Kessler tries again to move onto the front foot and establish the jab. Cracking action as Kessler really gambles. Froch – very very tired – misses with a wild swinging right. Cracking left from Froch and then a right uppercut. Into the final minute. Kessler wades in with Froch on the ropes. Magnificent round. Froch cut over the left eye as we go into the final 30 seconds. Big right from Froch now lands. Lovely left from Froch and another one. He’s wading forward as Kessler holds on. Now Kessler lands a right. Cracking left from Froch as the bell goes. Kessler just smiles at the man from Nottingham. Even round for me and I’ve got Kessler winning by a round – 116-115. But how will the judges score it?
Round 11: McCracken telling Froch that Kessler is there for the taking – could he be right? That cut has definitely breathed new life into Froch’s hopes of retaining his title, and his unbeaten record. Cracking combination from Kessler, who is being allowed to regain the initiative. Froch really needs to pour it on here and win these last two rounds. Lovely right hand from Froch lands right on the jaw of Kessler. But back comes Kessler and now we’ve got terrific toe-toe-toe action as Kessler lands with a big right. Froch’s chin must be made of stone. Cracking round. Both men looking tired now and what can Froch pull out in the final 30 seconds of the session. Good stuff from Froch in the closing seconds. He’s really tired but slugging away, nice left and a right, and then another right. Done just enough there for me Froch – just a round in it now on my card. 106-105 Kessler with three minutes left.
Round 10: Last three rounds now and will Froch’s conditioning save him, as it pretty much did in that astonishing final-round knockout of Jermain Taylor? Carl starting to pour it on a bit, and he probably needs to. Really nasty cut over Kessler’s left eye. Froch though showing a true champion’s heart as he tries to hang onto his belt. Froch tries to land with a big right counter. Trying to target that left eye of Kessler. The cut definitely troubling Kessler – he’s still trying to come forward but Froch has really gained confidence from that. Kessler fights back though, really game display from both men. Froch’s round for me and he’s pulled within a couple of rounds on my card – 97-95. Kessler’s left eye truly a mess – gaping gash above the left eyebrow.
Round Nine: Just watching the replay of that last-round attack and not sure Froch was as hurt as it first appeared – caught square on and legs momentarily rooted to the spot. Froch tries to land a left uppercut but misses wildly. Kessler continuing to set the pace and lands an uppercut. Froch trying to end the round strongly – lands with a sweeping left. Needs a big finish here Carl. Better round for Froch – one for the ‘Cobra’ for me. 88-85 for me. Cut for Kessler over his left eye and will that be a factor now?
Round Eight: Just watching the replay of that punch that caught Froch in the closing seconds of the seventh – definitely one to the back of the head. The Dane should have been pulled up for that one. Good right hand counter from Kessler lands as Froch as ever holds that left hand low. Kessler now unleashes a clubbing right but Froch manages to avoid flush impact. So far Froch hasn’t managed to find a way to take away the Froch jab and keep the Dane on the back foot. Now Kessler lands with a cracking right and Froch momentarily in trouble. Great chin though the ‘Cobra’. Danger time as he defends on the ropes. Desperate moments for Froch. Flings a left wildly but looking a bit ragged as the bell goes. No doubt that’s another for the Dane, 79-75 for him and Froch starting to run out of rounds if the judges see it the same way.
Round Seven: Into the second half of this one and McCracken really animated in the corner between rounds. Froch needs to start establishing the jab and taking control of this one – too much he’s having to right off the back foot with the Dane the man setting the pace. He’s come from behind before though, so no reason to believe he can’t again. Kessler though continuing to force Froch back. Triple jab from Kessler, and as ever trying to land that big right. Froch’s vaunted conditioning will be very much needed tonight in the second half of this one. Kessler catches Froch, and the ‘Cobra’ motions to say he was hit on the back of the head. Goes back to his corner with a helping hand from referee Griffin. The Danish crowd going wild. Another Kessler round – 69-66 on my card.
Round Six: Approaching the halfway stage now and Kessler comes out with a cracking right as he bids to regain the advantage. Froch though waves his arm to suggest it didn’t hurt. Cracking toe-to-toe action with Froch on the ropes, both men unloading. Kessler goes to the body and Froch replies to the head. The big worry for Froch as ever is that low guard – seemingly inviting disaster. Froch tries a left hook but Kessler again unloading with the ‘Cobra’ on the ropes. Good round for the Dane – just when he needed it most. Right and a left from Froch but never land meaningfully. Looking a little bit tired the Nottingham man. Defence right from Froch. Into the final 10 seconds and Kessler misses with a left hook as the bell sounds. Kessler’s round for me. 59-57 on my card.
Round Five: McCracken now telling Froch to up his workrate and movement. Good left from Kessler though before Froch comes back with a nice combination. Then the ‘Cobra’ gambles and looks really ragged and almost pays the price. Kessler almost connects with a big right. And now Kessler is down but it’s called a slip. Kessler was backpedalling as Froch tried to land a right, and went flat on his back. He’s back up the Dane and lands a cracking right. Now a fantastic right from Froch – stiffens Kessler’s legs and momentarily the Dane is in big trouble. Froch knows it. Kessler on the back foot for the first time. Very much Froch’s round and know for sure Kessler will be wondering whether it’s all starting to go wrong again. 49-48 Kessler on my card. Kessler bleeding from the nose.
Round Four: Simple instructions from Robert McCracken in the Froch corner: “Take the jab off him and get him on the back foot.” Something the Nottingham man hasn’t been able to do so far – will that change in the fourth? Chants of “Kessler, Kessler” go up again around the arena. Very much in the majority the Danes here. Kessler again walking Froch down and the ‘Cobra’ hasn’t really worked him out yet. Better jab now though from Carl and his hand speed is pretty impressive when he does unload. Lovely right from Froch lands flush on Kessler’s jaw but he takes it really well. Best moment so far for the Briton – and the best punch of the fight so far. Both men starting to unload – lovely left from Kessler but Froch hits back with a cracking right of his own. Froch, hands low, looking more confident in this session. Will he pay for that low guard. Froch now holds before Kessler tries to land the big right. Much better round. Even round for me – I have it 40-38 very very unoficially.
Round Three: Out for the third and Froch again mainly off the back foot as Kessler stalks and looks for the chance to unleash that booming right hand. Now Froch on the ropes but neat defensive work to get out of Dodge before Kessler can land meaningfully. Good jab from Kessler. Gaining in confidence it appears. Froch now tries to land with a left-right combination but Kessler avoids it adeptly. Bit more action in the third, starting to warm up a little after a tense opening. Clearly plenty of mutual respect from these two fighters. Froch definitely though trying to be more aggressive here. Still another round for the Dane on my card – 30-28 so far.
Round Two: Confident start from Froch there, looking pretty assured in there. Kessler trying to wrest the initiative early. Interesting to hear Robert McCracken telling Froch the opener was even but the judges will probably give it to Kessler. Guarantee that they’d rather not leave this one to the scorecards. If anything Froch the quicker of the two so far – Kessler now getting into range though. Left lead but Froch hits back with a decent right. Froch producing more variety than the Dane while Kessler trying to pin down the ‘Cobra’. No real fireworks yet and Froch mainly fighting on the counter. Kessler’s left lead gaining in accuracy. Nice jab from Kessler pierces the Froch guard. Kessler’s round for me. 20-19 for the Dane on my card.
Round One: Here we go fight fans – should be a beauty in Herning, Denmark as Carl Froch defends his WBC title against the dangerous Dane Mikkel Kessler. Out they come and will Kessler gamble on a fast start in a bid to take charge early. Deafening noise in the arena and they feel each other out in centre ring, just feinting and jabbing. Kessler tries to establish that potent left jab early, as Froch fights off the back foot – spearing out his jab. Kessler the man coming forward in the early going, and tries to tag Froch with a left hook on the ropes, but the Nottingham man is away before it lands. Kessler tries to land to the body but again Froch jabbing and moving to stay out of range. Froch tries a right to the body following by a right to the head. Nothing landing on the button so far. Froch now coming forward and the jab looking good early. Fairly pedestrian pace. Tough round to score – even for me.

2155: Chants of “Kessler, Kessler” go up around the arena as Jimmy Lennon Jr introduces the champion, and Carl Froch is now on his way to the ring. Boos greet his name. Here comes the ‘Cobra’ in that black robe, to the strains of Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’.
2154: Kessler climbs into the ring and is ready for a fight that he literally has to win – another defeat after that dismantling by Andre Ward and his days at the very top level could be numbered.
2152: Kessler – wearing a white T-shirt bearing his “Viking Warrior” nickname – enters the arena and – flanked by two security men – makes his way through the crowd toward the ring.
