It started as a novelty act: Carl Reiner would entertain friends at parties by pretending to interview a character he’d throw at Mel Brooks, who would immediately adopt the persona—a guy at a coffee shop, a famous film director, a submarine captain. The highlight of their impromptu act (which existed entirely in this Q format) was interviews with Brooks’ character the 2,000-Year-Old Man, an ancient Jewish guy who talked of living in caves...
