I was going to post this interview with Carl Reiner that Conan O'Brien did on The Tonight Show last night anyway, but it's an added bonus that the clip also includes Snoop Dogg, who listens to Reiner auditioning to sing on one of his CDs. I never really thought I'd ever include the words "Carl Reiner" and "Snoop Dogg" in the same sentence. It started as a novelty act: Carl Reiner would entertain friends at parties by pretending to interview a character he’d throw at Mel Brooks, who would immediately adopt the persona—a guy at a coffee shop, a famous film director, a submarine captain. The highlight of their impromptu act (which existed entirely in this Q format) was interviews with Brooks’ character the 2,000-Year-Old Man, an ancient Jewish guy who talked of living in caves...

Ask Mel Brooks about his enormously productive career in comedy and the 83-year-old performer defers to a relative in Brooklyn. "The output is not as big as my grandfather’s, he had a herring business," says Brooks, whose films include Space Balls, Blazing Saddles and The Producers. "Can you imagine the hundreds of thousands of herring he sold? That's an output. Herring is more real than the lustre of show biz – and, let me tell you, reality...

"THE 2,000 YEAR OLD MAN" was never intended to last one year, let alone 60. In the early 1950s, friends and fellow comedy writers Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks started doing the routine at parties: Reiner would play the interviewer and straight man, asking Brooks a series of questions that he would answer as the world's oldest man. For example: » REINER: What was the means of transportation then? » BROOKS: Mostly fear. » REINER: Fear...

One of our favorite comedy bits, and one that ironically rarely seems to age, is the Mel Brooks-Carl Reiner "2,000-year old man" shtick. Essentially, it's an interviewer talking to the oldest man alive played by Mel Brooks. He has opinions on everything in old Jewish man style. Take his stance on the Black Plague "Too many rats, not enough cats." In High School one of our favorite comedy albums was "The 2000 Year Old Man In The Year 2000...
