President Nicolas Sarkozy's 23-year-old son, Jean, on Thursday night gave up his bid to head the public agency that oversees Europe's largest business district, following a bitter row over nepotism. Jean Sarkozy's move to become chairman of the public management body of La Défense, west of Paris - a post his father occupied before him - was denounced as proof France was becoming a "banana republic" by opposition politicians.
