Mets' Delgado to have hip surgery

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado will undergo surgery on his right hip, the National League East team announced on their website on Monday.

Delgado, who has not played since May 10, will have the procedure on Tuesday. There was no word on when he is expected to return to action.

"What we have to do now is try to find out how we're going to continue to play good baseball without Carlos Delgado," New York manager Jerry Manuel told reporters.

Delgado, who has 473 career home runs, is batting .298 with 23 RBIs this season. Last year he produced 38 homers and 115 RBIs, figures that prompted the Mets to pick up his $12 million contract option.

Fernando Tatis and Jeremy Reed will take over at first base for the Mets.
