California Supreme Court Justice Carlos Moreno—the sole justice to cast a vote against upholding Proposition 8—has unexpectedly announced his retirement. Justice Carlos R. Moreno is stepping down from the California Supreme Court effective February 28th and ten years after being appointed by Governor Gray Davis. Justice Moreno is currently the only Democrat on the state’s high court and the only one who voted to strike down Proposition 8, a ballot initiative that banned gay marriage.
