Professional basketball Hall of Famer Dave Bing has been re-elected Detroit mayor. The 65-year-old Democrat defeated accountant Tom Barrow in Tuesday's nonpartisan general election. Bing's NBA career lasted 12 seasons, nine with the Detroit Pistons. As mayor, he has laid off workers and demanded a 10 percent wage cut to help address the city's ongoing budget deficit. It was the fourth time Detroit voters cast ballots this year for mayor. A lawyer who won a police whistle-blowers' case that led to the downfall of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick testified Thursday that he gave a copy of the ex-mayor's text messages to the Detroit Free Press in October 2007. The admission by Mike Stefani came during a misconduct hearing before the Michigan Attorney Discipline Board. Stefani testified he obtained three copies of the messages through a subpoena shortly after his clients won a $6.5 million jury award in their case against Kilpatrick. DETROIT, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Prosecutors alleged in court that disgraced former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has received previously undisclosed financial help from top city businessmen. Prosecutors alleged in Wayne County Circuit Court Thursday that Kilpatrick and his family received loans and other money from top Detroit businessmen such as Ambassador Bridge owner Manuel Moroun and Compuware Chief Executive Officer Peter Karmanos, the Detroit Free Press reported. Kilpatrick received $50,000 in cash from Moroun while the former mayor was serving time in jail after pleading guilty to two felony counts of obstruction of justice, prosecutors alleged.
