“Escape” by Carolyn Jessop

I just finished reading “Escape” by Carolyn Jessop! Other than the Alex Cross Series by James Patterson, it is rare that I make time to finish a book so, the fact that I read this one means a lot!

It is a sort of a hard read…difficult in content and a little drawn in a few spots but, it was one that I had to finish!  The story is just that gripping! It was like a textbook told in first-person which is my preferred way to hear about something.  Someone else’s therapeutic literature that is chock-full of first-hand knowledge, emotion and triumph!

John and I are big fans of the HBO Series, “Big Love” and we found through this book that the writers of “Big Love” stay true to the truth without stepping over the line from entertainment to doom and gloom.  There is no way that the show could show the real happenings without going completely dark!  I suppose that by keeping it light and cleverly interjecting references to the ways of the manipulative darkness that is the cult, the writers are tempting those of us who are knowledge seekers to look further into the subject!  For those that don’t care, the show’s still quite entertaining…we think so, anyway!

In “Escape”, Carolyn tells how she was born into the FLDS community and was married off to a loveless, dark marriage to a somewhat powerful man while she secretly armed herself with knowledge and strength so that her and as many of her children could escape. And she does it!!

I have so much respect for her for all that she has done.  For rescuing herself and her children from a dangerous and dysfunctional atmosphere.  For climbing the mountain instead of wishing that she could or whining that she can’t.  For standing up against those who cause harm knowing that as long as she walks with Jesus, she will be okay.  And she is okay!  Read the book!!

Oh!  And you may be asking why there is a picture of Kathryn Heigl is going to play Carolyn in the movie, “Escape” and I am ready!
