A polygamist whose nine wives allegedly include three daughters and two sisters of the self-styled prophet of a Mormon sect became the first person to go on trial yesterday after a controversial raid on the group’s Texas compound.  

A sect member with nine wives has been convicted of sexually assaulting an underage bride in the first case stemming from the controversial raid on a polygamist compound in Texas.  

Raymond Jessop is the first man from the Yearning for Zion Ranch to go on trial since authorities raided the Texas compound, belonging to the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints, in April 2008. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of sexual assault of a child, a charge stemming from his alleged marriage to an underage girl.
