Carrie Underwood bagged the entertainer of the year award on Sunday night at the Academy of Country Music Awards. She won the top honor that has evaded women for nearly a decade. Taylor Swift won the album of the year and Julianne Hough took away top new artist award.

Underwood went on to become the first woman to hold the title and break the  Kenny Chesney’s four-year win after Dixie Chicks in 2000. “I accepted that award on behalf of myself and my fans, but also on behalf of other women who came before me that kicked butt but never got the recognition they deserved. I can’t wait (for) the day, which I hope is in the very near future, where having females in the category is no big deal whatsoever”, said Underwood after she recessed the Country music’s boys’ club.

Underwood broke the chance of Chesney to become Alabama’s for most entertainer of the year awards. While she was up to accept the honor Chesney kissed her and greeted her for the win. “He told me he was proud of me”, added Underwood, the American Idol winner in 2005. she has the honor of eight No. 1 country hits including the signature single, “Jesus Take the Wheel” in her bag.

Swift too is dominating the country music at present. She won album of the year for her second-year disc “Fearless“. Both her albums have topped the 3 million mark. Swift has four nominations for the evening. While talking to re reporters backstage, Swift said that she “obsessed” over making “Fearless“. “I labored over this album for two years. The fact that you can write songs in your bedroom about your feelings and boys and can win album of the year at the ACMs. I just didn’t think that was possible” she said. She also got a special honor for attracting many young people to country music as McEntire presented her with an ACM Crystal Milestone Award.

Other winners included Jamey Johnson, Sugarland, Trace Adkins and Brad Paisley. Adkins performed “‘Til the Last Shot’s Fired”, as a salute to U.S. troops, with the West Point Glee Club in honor of servicemen and women. John Rich’s angry anthem “Shuttin’ Detroit Down” also stirred the crowd.
