Casey Affleck in talks to play the Archangel Gabriel in Alex Proyas’ ‘Paradise Lost’

Casey Affleck
The last time we saw the Archangel Gabriel on the big screen was in Scott Stewarts rather badly received Legion.  There he was potrayed as a fanatical soldier of god out to slaughter the remnants of mankind.  Kevin Durand was the man called upon to ‘halo up’ in that instance.  Gabriels presence has been somewhat lacking since that appearance.  However we could be about to see a new Gabriel if reports are to be believed.  Apparently the talented Casey Affleck (Superlative in Gone Baby Gone and soon to be seen in Tower Heist) is in talks to strap on those wings for Alex Proyas in Paradise Lost.  If he does decide to take the role he’ll be joining Ben Walker, Djimon Hounsou and of course Bradley Cooper as Lucifer.  We previously reported on Alex Proyas’ adaptation of Paradise Lost some six weeks ago, it’s an ambitious project and one sure to divide people.  After all how does a dense 17th century poem translate into an action heavy, 3D adventure film?  With filming due to start next year and a release date somewhere in 2013, we’ll just have to wait and see what Proyas has in mind.  In the meantime let’s hope that Afflecks Gabriel can stand up to the ultimate screen version as seen in Gregory Widens under-rated classic The Prophecy.  In that film the legendary Christopher Walken played him as a scene stealing,  coldly calculating, child murdering, soul eating madman.  Of course in Paradise Lost Gabriel is on the side of the good guys, but Affleck will certainly have his work cut out for him if he want’s to turn in a performance anything like as memorable as Walkens.

Paradise Lost is set for release in 2013
