Ragdoll cats are a beautiful pure breed that has a striking and elegant appearance. This gorgeous cat is a unique breed that descends from a mix of Angora, Siamese, Himalayan, and Burmese and was first bred in the United States in the 1960's. It receives it's name 'ragdoll' due to the fact that these cats are known to go limp like a ragdoll when held and picked up.
They are a shorter, but large and muscular breed that has a long, thick coat of fur. Their eyes are varying shade of beautiful blue, which is a trait that is associated with the 'pointed' markings, much like those of a Siamese that most of them have on their ears, faces, tails, and legs. Some of them do have another marking pattern such as mitted, bi-color, or van. Ragdolls come in any one of 6 colors; blue, chocolate, lilac, red, cream, and seal.
They are very loyal, affectionate companions that thrive when provided with lots of human love and attention. Easy-going and calm these cats are not really fighters so they are best kept as indoor animals. Mostly they are very compatible with other pets too. While Ragdolls are pretty quiet, they do have a prominent purr.
Since these pets are very clean and efficient at grooming themselves, they do not require daily brushing. Yet since they thrive on attention, they do enjoy a thorough brushing once or twice a week to prevent their lovely thick coats from getting matted, or developing knots. Even bathing them one or two times per year is good for them, as long as a special cat shampoo is used.
Most ragdoll cats weigh about 12-20 pounds, the males are usually larger than the females. A generally healthy breed with no particular disorders or concerns, regular veterinary check-ups and vaccinations should be all they need in terms of healthcare. Many of them can live to 15 years old or so with proper nutrition and care.
Ragdoll cats are sure to be a very loving and fun addition to any family who is looking for a cat. They are impressive to look at, but also enjoyable to interact with. Being easy-going, they are perfect friends for any other pets or children.
