Pete Davidson And Kate Beckinsale's Age Difference Doesn't Bother Them, And It Shouldn't Bother Us Either

Davidson addressed the topic by reciting a list of men who dated much younger women *without* being harassed.

Pete Davidson Calls Out The Media's Double Standard On His Relationship With Kate Beckinsale
NBC

Pete Davidson wants you to stop minding the gap, thanks.

During the latest episode of Saturday Night Live's "Weekend Update," the comedian addressed his fascinating love life. Last week, actress Kate Beckinsale and Davidson made headlines when they were photographed canoodling at a hockey game. They were silent afterward, but on Saturday, March 9, Davidson finally confirmed they're an item.

The media's fascination over their relationship stems from their large age difference. Davidson is 25 while Beckinsale is 20 years his senior (do the math), and everyone's obsessed — and that's where that age old double standard comes into play.

Davidson used his appearance on "Weekend Update" as an opportunity to remind everyone age is nothing but a number.

"Is there anything else you want to talk about? Is there anything else going on? Not like a new girlfriend situation at all, Pete?" Colin Jost chided the comic, giving him the floor to speak his mind.

"I'm new to this," Davidson said. "So if you have questions about a relationship with a big age difference, just ask..."

He proceeded to share a looong list of celebrities — specifically, men — who have been or are currently involved with significantly younger women:

"Leonardo DiCaprio, Jason Statham, Michael Douglas, Richard Gere, Jeff Goldblum, Scott Disick, Dane Cook, Derek Jeter, Bruce Willis, Harrison Ford, Tommy Lee, Alec Baldwin, Sean Penn, whoever the president of France is, Mel Gibson, Billy Joel, Mick Jagger, Sylvester Stallone, Eddie Murphy, Kelsey Grammer, Larry King, Larry King, Larry King, Rod Stewart, and Donald Trump," he recited.

Davidson didn't say anything beyond that, but that long laundry list of actors dating younger women is proof there's a glaring double standard when it comes to relationship age gaps. DiCaprio gets little to no flak when he dates models the minute they turn 18, and nobody said anything when Jeff Goldblum married his wife, who is three decades younger than him. And Larry King? He married a much younger woman three times, and no one batted an eyelash. Yet Beckinsale faces criticism for dating someone younger?

Unfortunately, this problematic mentality is nothing new. Just ask Demi Moore, Heidi Klum, Kourtney Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, and Robin Wright. These women have dated or married people significantly younger than them, and in return, they were scrutinized, debased, and referred to as "cougars."

At the end of the day, age really is just a number. People outside of Davidson and Beckinsale's relationship do not get a say about what they should and shouldn't do. They're consenting adults, people! They're happy, and as fans, we should be, too.
