Just When You Thought It Was Over, Johnny Depp Has Filed A $50 Million Defamation Lawsuit Against Amber Heard
Nearly three years after their divorce was finalized, Depp hasn't let go of his vendetta against Heard.
Johnny Depp isn't ready to let go of Amber Heard.
The Fantastic Beasts actor has reportedly filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife that states the actress perpetrated an "elaborate hoax to generate positive publicity" and "advance her career."
In December 2018, Heard wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post in which she explained her experience with domestic violence without explicitly naming Depp. She explained that after coming forward about the abuse she suffered, she had to change her number frequently due to death threats.
"For months, I rarely left my apartment, and when I did, I was pursued by camera drones and photographers on foot, on motorcycles and in cars. Tabloid outlets that posted pictures of me spun them in a negative light," she wrote. "I felt as though I was on trial in the court of public opinion — and my life and livelihood depended on myriad judgments far beyond my control."
Heard also recounted the influence the allegations had on her career. She said some of her friends and colleagues told her not to go public with the allegations or she risked getting blacklisted. Heard decided to come forward anyway, and one movie she was attached to recast her role. Another brand she shot a two-year campaign for dropped her in a snap. She also said there was speculation as to whether she could still fulfill her role as Mera in Justice League and Aquaman.
Despite not naming Depp in the piece, his camp insinuated the op-ed "depends on the central premise that Ms. Heard was a domestic abuse victim and that Mr. Depp perpetrated domestic violence against her." Depp claims that because of the op-ed, Disney wasted no time dropping him from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
According to court documents obtained by The Blast, the lawsuit purports Depp never laid a hand on Heard and that she is the one who attacked him — despite evidence to the contrary. It also claims Heard faked the injuries she accused Depp of inflicting on her, but fails to go into detail on how she faked the bruises and video footage.
"Ms. Heard is not a victim of domestic abuse; she is a perpetrator," it reads.
Depp's lawyers claim Heard's "implication that Mr. Depp is a domestic abuser is categorically and demonstrably false."
And that's not all. Depp's attorneys are also dragging Elon Musk into the mess. They claim Heard was romantically involved with the Tesla founder while she was still married to Depp.
We're not sure what that has to do with his defamation case, but he's clearly getting the jabs in where he can.
As of April 2017, Depp was reportedly $40 million in debt.
Heard's camp was quick to issue a rebuttal. They say Depp's lawsuit is groundless, and that it's a brazen effort to silence the actress which, yeah, pretty much sums it up.
“This frivolous action is just the latest of Johnny Depp’s repeated efforts to silence Amber Heard. She will not be silenced. Mr. Depp’s actions prove he is unable to accept the truth of his ongoing abusive behavior," Heard’s lawyer, Eric George, said in a statement. "But while he appears hell-bent on achieving self-destruction, we will prevail in defeating this groundless lawsuit and ending the continued vile harassment of my client by Mr. Depp and his legal team."
Depp and Heard met on the set of the film The Rum Diary in 2009, but it wasn't until 2012 that they started dating, after Depp split from his former longtime partner, Vanessa Paradis. They got engaged in January 2014 and tied the knot in February 2015. In May 2016, Heard filed for divorce citing "irreconcilable differences." She issued a restraining order against the actor two months later. Their divorce was settled in August of the same year, and Heard donated her $7 million settlement to various charities.
The irony of this development is not lost on us. Throughout the divorce, Heard was labeled a "gold digger" — despite the fact that she was negatively financially impacted — but Depp seems to be the one looking for a payout.
