HTC Eris and Motorola Droid: Android Cell Phones Square up

About two months ago we had not heard of the Motorola Droid, but since Verizon started to run a few ads to put the Apple iPhone down, all we hear is the Droid now. If you thought that things were made now, then the launch of the HTC Droid Eris has certainly helped to spice things up a little more in the constant batter that is Google Android and the iPhone.

So tomorrow you will have the choice of two cell phones running on the Google Android OS, the HTC Eris and the Motorola Droid. PC World thought that they would square the two smartphones together to see what they were up against.

The Motorola Droid weighs in at 6 ounces and when closed measures 4.56-by-2.36-by-0.54 inches. The HTC Eris has a rounder feel and weighs 4.23 ounces and measures 4.45-by-2.19-by-0.51, which is only slightly smaller.

As the Droid is larger it comes as no surprise that the screen is larger, 3.7-inches compared to the 3.2-inch screen on the Eris. The Droid offers a much better resolution, 480 by 854, compared to the Eris’s 320-by-480 resolution. Both handsets have a 5-megapixel camera, but again the Droid wins that battle with its LED Flash.

The Eris runs on Android 1.5, where the Droid has the latest Android 2.0 OS. All the extra features of the Droid come at a price, $200 after a $100 mail-in-rebate, compare that two the $100 price tag of the Eris after a $100 mail-in-rebate.
