Charla Nash Pictures Reveal Post-Healing Results of Face Transplant

Don't Miss:
It's been two-and-a-half years since Charla Nash was attacked by a chimpanzee who very nearly killed her. She lost both her hands and most of her face when she was attacked by the animal and afterward underwent a still-experimental face transplant process.

The first pictures released after Charla's face transplant were nearly as gruesome as the before pictures. While it was clear that the bone structure had been changed so that she might one day have a normally-functioning nose and mouth, the first images showed mounds of swollen flesh horrifyingly attached to her face.

Based on pictures released Thursday, it would seem Charla's face transplant has healed up considerably, and she's taken a big step toward leading a better life. Far from the misshapen face seen in the earlier images, Charla now has a defined nose, mouth, and even jawline.

"I will now be able to do things I once took for granted," Nash said in a statement. "I will be able to smell. I will be able to eat normally. I will no longer be disfigured. I will have lips and will speak clearly once again. I will be able to kiss and hug loved ones."
