Brooke Astor’s Apartment Sells for Half of Asking Price

The 15th & 16th floor duplex of 778 Park Avenue, a pre-war building that rises majestically between 73rd & 74th Streets on the Upper East Side, just reminded us that even though sales may be up, prices aren’t. The 5-bedroom, 4 1/2 bath apartment that once belonged to New York socialite and philanthropist Brooke Astor just sold for less than half of the $46 million price tag it had when it was first put on the market in 2008.

Anthony Marshall, Astor’s son who was convicted of grand larceny for stealing money from his mother’s estate when she was over a hundred years old, reportedly didn’t mind selling at a deep discount to pay his legal fees. The property ended up fetching $21 million, which is over a million more than the previous contract that was denied earlier this year by the building’s co-op board.
