Police say Detroit Lions running back Mikel Leshoure was caught chewing marijuana during a recent traffic stop in southwestern Michigan. The incident on March 12 occurred less than a month after police in a different Berrien County community say they caught Leshoure with marijuana. Prosecutor Art Cotter says Leshoure was due in court Monday for the more recent case but hadn't appeared by 4 p.m.  

Detroit Lions defensive lineman Nick Fairley was arrested on a second-degree marijuana possession charge on Tuesday, the Press-Register in Mobile, Ala., reported. Fairley, 24, was jailed on $1,000 bail, according to records at the Mobile County Metro Jail.  

The Lions’ March re-signing of RB Kevin Smith looks all the better now, with news of two marijuana-related incidents for second-year back Mikel Leshoure coming to light. Leshoure, who missed the 2011 season with an Achilles tendon injury, was arrested in Michigan on Feb. 18 and March 12 on separate marijuana possession charges. The latter charge, which is reportedly a felony, is unresolved.

Down the road, the Lions’ selection of Iowa OT Riley Reiff could be regarded as a nice value for Detroit. If nothing else, it is a case of sensible planning. OLT Jeff Backus will be 35 in September, and ORT Gosder Cherilus enters the final year of his contract. (Backus comes off an arm injury, but he's expected to be ready for training camp, according to the Detroit Free Press.)  

The Lions’ first-round pick in 2011, DT Nick Fairley, did not start as a rookie. Could Detroit draft another first-rounder who doesn’t project as a first-teamer in 2012? GM Martin Mayhew, speaking at his pre-draft press conference, suggested that could be the case.  

The 2012 Detroit Lions' schedule gives the team a shot at chasing down the Green Bay Packers for a division title in the NFC North. The team has a great chance to get out to a fast start with some underperforming opponents, but a quirk in the schedule also gives them a bye in Week 5.  

As the Detroit Lions entered the offseason, one of their most glaring holes was at the safety position. Though Louis Delmas is a young, hard-hitting option at the position, the team desperately needed a complimentary player to form a devastating tandem in the defensive backfield. They needed someone with good hands, the ability to read the offense and to excel in areas Delmas could not.  

Detroit Lions running back Jahvid Best, who missed 11 games last year after sustaining his second concussion of the season, is expected to be cleared for football contact in June, according to what Lions general manager Martin Mayhew told a radio station, the Lions' official website reported Tuesday.  

The 2012 NFC North head-to-head schedule begins in Week 2, when the Chicago Bears travel to play the Green Bay Packers during Thursday night football. The NFC North teams have one head-to-head Monday night game, which is on Monday, Oct 22, when the Detroit Lions travel to play Chicago.  

The Detroit Lions, to use a familiar phrase, seem to have turned the corner. They are loaded with young, talented and experienced players. Their nucleus of Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson and Ndamukong Suh is locked in with multi-year contracts.  

Here is a list of other players in the NFL arrested on drug or alcohol related charges this year: Leroy Hill, Nate Collins, J.T. Thomas, Culbreath ... Fans should not blame Martin Mayhew or Jim Schwartz for "allowing" this to happen.  

COMMENTARY | Shaun Hill did what he could in Matt Stafford's absence. It wasn't great, but he managed the game while the Detroit Lions' starting franchise quarterback was sidelined for most of 2010 after suffering yet another shoulder injury.
