United Nations named Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron as an official Messenger of Peace. The South American-born actress will work with the United Nations to prevent violence against women. The United Nations has estimated that one out of every three women is likely to be beaten, forced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime.
Theron has already started the
Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project to help educate poor children and their families in
South Africa, where HIV infection rates are as high as 30 percent. Theron has also helped support a rape crisis center in Cape Town. The actress knows the effects of domestic violence firsthand -- at the age of 15 she witnessed her mother shooting and killing her alcoholic father after he threatened the family in a drunken rage.
Other Messengers of Peace include
George Clooney and
Michael Douglas. Messengers of Peace are named for three-year terms. Past Messengers of Peace include
Muhammad Ali
and the late opera singer
Luciano Pavarotti.
