POUGHKEEPSIE -- Poughkeepsie Police Chief Ron Knapp released a statement late Friday evening saying that the officer caught in an exchange of gunfire outside the train station has died from his injuries.

The unidentified officer, an 18-year veteran, was shot in the head. Police believe the gunman killed a woman earlier in the day. The gunman was fatally shot, but police are unsure if he was killed by police or if he shot himself.
