"Creating this composition for Mika Yoshida was a pure joy. Her only request to the composer was to have "groove" be part of the composition...The piece was written so it could be performed with the exactly written notes or with the players freely interpreting their parts and improvising their solos. Mika brings a joyful enthusiasm to the marimba that is captivating and, being a marimba enthusiast myself, I spent some time playing my marimba at home to help me conjure the phrases that make up...Read Full Story
The story behind a modern jazz standard
The son of a trumpeter in a Dixieland band, the virtuosic keyboardist Chick Corea is revered as one of the principal alchemists in the fusion of jazz with rock, funk, and Latin music. After recording his seminal 1968 album, Now He Sings, Now He Sobs, he replaced Herbie Hancock as the piano chair in Miles Davis’s band—the band that recorded such classic albums as Bitches Brew. throughout his eclectic career, Corea has collaborated with vibraphonist...Read Full Story

Not sure what’s happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better To The Stars gets. To The Stars simply put is one of Chick Corea’s best CDs to date.
I wish it weren’t the case but, it’s not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t...Read Full Story

‘Spain’ (Chick Corea) – jazz piano lesson. I did this about 7 years ago, and it has been kicking around the web since then. I recorded the bass and drum tracks first, and improvised the piano part later. I tried another method of annotating, using a ‘spotlight’ effect to highlight the section of music being referred to in the text. Again, the audio on this video has been spoilt – on the first solo section, there...Read Full Story
I was perusing the brochure for the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival yesterday when I stumbled upon an ad for the 2012-13 Flynn Center season, which mentions names (but no dates) for some of the folks who’ll visit the Burlington performing ...

In 1968, Corea recorded the trio classic Now He Sings, Now He Sobs with bassist Miroslav Vitous and drummer Roy Haynes. It has become a much-taught trio album, and Corea's spinning blues choruses in the opening track, "Matrix," provide a pivotal ...
Pianist Chick Corea, drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Stanley Clarke, who all advanced their instruments in explosive, groundbreaking ways during the jazz-rock fusion era, are touring together for the first time as a trio. The Jack DeJohnette Trio performs Thursday-Sunday, May 10-13, at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley, in Seattle.
Mary Chapin Carpenter, Chick Corea and Michael Martin Murphey have all just been added to the calendar at the Orpheum Theatre, the venue’s president Jennifer Wright told those gathered Sunday for the sold-out Glen Campbell concert. Carpenter ...
Whenever these two US superstars’ paths cross they make beautiful music together. Not only brilliant soloists, pianist Corea and vibraphonist Burton also share an extraordinary rhythmic and melodic rapport, something they discovered in 1973 while making the Crystal Silence album — still considered a masterpiece — and which smartly kicked in again last night.
(Concord)"I used to think that someday we would run out of ideas," Gary Burton said recently, but he and Chick Corea have been playing duets for 30 years now, on and off, and they still work together like a pair of endlessly creative twins. Piano and vibraphone make a formidable combination – percussive, harmonic, melodic – and simply following the interweaving lines will keep all your faculties busy. But you'd have to be seriously unmusical...
Kenny Garrett Quartet Soiled Dove Underground Denver, CO May 4, 2012
The last couple times Kenny Garrett came through Denver, he was a sideman. In 2010 he toured with e: Chick Corea's Freedom Band that also featured m: Christian McBride on bass and 85-year-old m: Roy Haynes on drums. The year before, Garrett was a member of the Five Peace Band which also featured Corea and McBride, along with m: John McLaughlin on guitar and m: Vinnie...
With a partnership lasting longer than most marriages, pianist Chick Corea and vibraphonist m: Gary Burton know what it takes to keep things fresh. Since the release of Crystal Silence (ECM, 1973), they have toured virtually every year, but record far less frequently, with only six albums to their credit, most recently The New Crystal Silence (Concord, 2008). With the pianist especially busy these days--his The Continents: Music for Jazz...
