ATLANTA — The opener of the Washington Nationals’ biggest series yet this year — perhaps their biggest series in seven years — reached a crucial point Friday night in the seventh inning. Their four-run lead over the Atlanta Braves had withered to one.  

Going in as a relief pitcher in the fifth inning, after starting pitcher Ross Detwiler gave up three runs, five hits and four walks in 4-1/3 innings, Wang gave up only one run in three innings, leading the Nationals to a 7-4 victory over the Braves.

He has a 2.70 ERA with one save in five career relief appearances. To make room for Wang, the Nationals placed right-hander Ryan Mattheus on the 15-day DL retroactive to May 21 with a strained left foot.

Keep in mind: The Nationals cannot trade Edwin Jackson or Wang without their consent until June 16 because they both signed as free agents this offseason. Johnson was able to watch Wang’s start, and he saw the same form Wang had in spring training.  

It’s hard to imagine the Nationals would send fifth starter Ross Detwiler to the bullpen after posting a 2.10 ERA through his first six starts. It’s also hard to ignore that the Nationals lined up Wang to pitch on Detwiler’s day to start.  

Wang allowed a run in the first inning but settled in after that. The righty from Taiwan scattered two runs on eight hits over seven innings. He threw 89 pitches with 61 registering for strikes.
