Lapis Lazuli

Yesterday Al Jazeera News ran a story, “The Lure of Lazuli”,  by James Bays about Afghanistan’s lapis lazuli depsoites in Sar-i-Sang in the Kocha Valley.  Like most mines, it sounds like a long arduous journey to reach.  Sar-i-Sang is at a high altitude, breathing is not easy. And like most gemstone mining, the gap between the miners and the final consumer is enormous.

The miners work in deep shafts setting off dynamite with no safety equipment.  They earn money only when they find something.

Lapis Lazuli has been mined in Afghanistan for 6,000 years.  This deep blue gem is used in many ancient sculptures and pieces of religious art.  The only pure source in the country is in Sar-i-Sang.
