Simms joins the Broncos – Do We Sign Another Quarterback?

Chris Simms signed a contract with the Denver Broncos to serve as the #2 on the depth chart behind Jay Cutler. Fisher often praised Simms’ ability – then again, he does all his players – but to me, Jeff seemed a little more genuine in his praise of Chris Simms. You have to wonder what would happen if Bud Adams were removed from the equation: Would Simms be our #2 and VY be cut loose, would we have kept all three, or would things be exactly the same?

In any case, with Simms gone, Reinfeldt, Fisher and co need to decide whether they want to pursue a legitimate 3rd string QB or whether they want to hold only two active QBs on the roster, as they frequently have in seasons past. It depends on how they approach their current situation: Do they see Kerry and Vince as two solid QBs who have each been to a Pro-Bowl in the past three seasons or do they see them as an aging journeyman and an unproven talent? My guess is that they go forward with just the two of them for now, but they’ll monitor the progress of each very carefully. Any signs of aging by Kerry, or if VY does not show enough improvement, then we can expect the front office to bring in someone else (Byron Leftwich, perhaps?)

We’ll see how things play out in the near future. I don’t believe the team will address QB in the draft^* , but if they do take a QB in a mid to later round then I guess we can squash any thought of a veteran coming in.

*Note: Aside from VY and Mac, the only QB the Titans have taken in the past 15 years is Kevin Daft, a 5th rounder out of UC-Davis in 1999, who never so much as attempted a pass in the NFL. He did, however, lead the Scottish Claymores to the 2000 World Bowl, where he suffered a gut-wrenching, last-second loss to the Rhein Fire
