Trial For Titans Backup QB Chris Simms Starts In NYC

A defense lawyer says Titans backup quarterback Chris Simms got charged with driving while high on marijuana because a New York City police officer misunderstood Simms telling him a passenger had smoked the drug, Simms went on trial Monday.

He was stopped at a police sobriety checkpoint July 1. A prosecutor told jurors an officer found Simms slurring his speech, moving slowly and saying he’d smoked marijuana. Simms lawyer Harvey Steinberg told the jury Simms actually told the officer that a friend in the back seat had been smoking the drug. The 30-year-old Simms could face up to a year in jail if convicted in the misdemeanor case.
