Christian Bale’s ‘The Flowers of War’ Opens to More Cities on January 20, 2012

Director Zhang Yimou’s (Hero, House of Flying Daggers) The Flowers of War will be opening in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and 10 other cities on January 20, 2012. Wrekin Hill Entertainment and Row 1 Productions have scheduled for it to open in more theaters, since it’s a blockbuster in China and did great during its limited run in late December, pulling in $30,000 per theater. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol on IMAX pulled in $35,000 per theater.

The Flowers of War stars Christian Bale as a Westerner who seeks refuge inside a Catholic church during Japan’s invasion of China in 1937. It’s inside this church that he meets a beautiful Chinese courtesan who helps him save a bunch of schoolgirls from the evil Japanese. Yes, a white guy in a foreign land who falls in love with a native there and saves the day. Suddenly, thoughts of Dances with Wolves, The Last Samurai, Pocahontas, and Avatar come into mind.
