Here I am back from the 39emes meetings of Arles, overflowing head of images, almost halee skin, body still numb by these true false rest days (every hour visit to expo was averaged followed two hours of recovery on the terrace, Garance we joining when she preferred to not stay by the pool).

Arles in Focus

I’m back from the 39th Rencontres d’arles [photography festival]. My head is full of pictures, my skin almost tanned, my body numbed by this non-vacation (each hour of exhibition visit was compensated for by two hours outside a coffee, sometimes with Garance, when she was not by the pool at her hotel).

It was the first time that I went to Arles (or in Arles, I’ll never know how they say). I was immediately seduced by the calm beauty of the city by charming hospitality of its inhabitants, culture wind which blows across.

It was my first time in Arles. I was seduced by the sedate beauty of the town, by the charming welcome of its inhabitants, by the sense of culture you could feel everywhere.

But what I was most pleasantly surprised, c

’ is how each expo is beautifully integrated into the architecture of the city. Most of them are indeed in loaded places of history – churches, monasteries, or old industrial warehouses. As many boxes of exception for photos that are equally (above, Peter Lindbergh expo at the Church of the precheurs brothers).

But the most pleasant surprise was the way the exhibitions were perfectly integrated with the town’s architecture. Most of them took place in historical settings such as churches, monasteries or former warehouses. All these places were the best frames one could imagine for great pictures (above, Peter Lindberg’s exhibition at the church of the brethren-Precheurs).

Christian Lacroix by Gregoire Alexandre – the jocular 2008 festival poster created by Michel Bouvet

After Martin Parr in 2004 and Raymond Depardon in 2006, Christian Lacroix was this year invited Commissioner. Numerous exhibitions spread throughout the city therefore wore his brand, both ensuring coherence and eclecticism at all. All do I not like, far from it, but it was so much to see that my heart beating too many to fit in this note, I will come back tomorrow and tomorrow.

After Martin Parr in 2004 and Raymond Depardon

in 2006, Christian Lacroix was this year’s guest curator. Not surprisingly, the numerous exhibitions all over the town were influenced by his choices, making the whole event eclectic yet coherent. I didn’t like everything, but so many exhibitions appealed to me that I’ll need some extra notes to show them to you.

Let’s still to at the outset that the main exhibitions were devoted to two giants of contemporary fashion photography: Paolo Roversi (left) and Peter Lindbergh (right). While I have come to meetings without preference – wholesale, I admire them both without so their devoted cult – I spent my stay to change avis… Without ultimately succeed to decide. Between the smooth sensual and poetic girls Roversi and the bitter androgyny of Peter Lindbergh, mon coeur balance.

On the evening of our arrival, we have yet had a ”mano a mano” at the ancient theatre, whose purpose was precisely to confront two views of photographers. I was a joy to this debate and Roversi and Lindbergh me were surprised by their complicity and humour, but lack of clarity of the questions quickly proved frustrating: basically, it is has not learned much about their inspirations, their technique, their vision of the profession. Had the pleasure to admire a selection of photos projected very large forma

Today, let’s just say the two main exhibitions were dedicated to two contemporary fashion photography giants: Paolo Roversi (on the left) and Peter Lindbergh (on the right). When I arrived, I admired both of them without being a total fan of either. Then I spent my whole stay in Arles trying to make up my mind…without coming to a decision. Between Roversi’s soft and poetic sensuality and Lindberg’s tough androgyny, I still don’ t know which one I prefer.

The day we arrived, the pair took part in a ”mano a mano” debate to compare their two points of view. Roversi and Lindbergh surprised me by their complicity and their humour, purpose the moderator’s inability to encourages them with precise questions quickly became frutrating: we didn’t learn enough about their inspirations, their technical or the way they see their job. Still, we had the pleasure of admiring a selection of their work on a giant screen.

However, for me, highlight of the evening was the tribute to Yves Saint Laurent Edmonde Charles-Roux.  The vision of this great Lady of 88 years, major figure of Vogue, visionary journalist, biographer of Chanel, evoking the missing designer with a strong, clear voice in its elegant white tailor made me get tears in their eyes.

The highlight of the evening was Edmonde Charles-Roux’ tribute to Yves Saint Laurent. I was almost moved to tears by the vision of this 88 year old journalistic legend, a leading light in the history of Vogue and the biographer of Chanel. I was hypnotised by her clear and strong voice and her elegant white follows.

Finally, I will end this overview with two images of the parade Christian Lacroix haute couture which took place Saturday, back to the ancient theatre. One hour before a thunderstorm bilge city, but it wasn’t what was going to stop the organizers of the festival. While the models paraded pitched on their too high heels full of ultra film extracts well draining is reached on the giant screen. I didn’t know more where to give head!

A tomorrow for discovery photo.

Finally, let’s finish with two images from the Christian Lacroix catwalk show that closed the event. Less than an hour earlier, the entire arena had been soaked by a violent storm – but that wasn’t going to stop the defiant festival organisers. While the models strutted past on their high heels, extracts from some of the best dressed films in cinema history unfurled on the giant screen. I hardly knew where to look.

See you tomorrow for my favorite photo.
