SEPTEMBER 26, 1971, Christiania became a new brand. A name for a brand new settlement, a community with a very free spirit. The spirit of Anarchism was certainly one of the main tendencies. It still is. Other "tendencies" and many sides of human nature have also always been present. In good and bad. Liberalism. Collectivism. Egoism. Individualism. Altruism.

Life in Christiania is and has always been the whole spectrum from pure hippie love to the hardest hard core law of the jungle.

THE WORD first popped up in the mind of Viktor Esmann, a danish hippie.
To Viktor, a young man from Christianshavn, an 'Amsterdam like' neighborhood with canals, CHRISTIANIA was just the name for a pioneer settlement to be. The first quatters appearing during the autumn of 1971 called themselves settlers, 'nybyggere'. They began to take over the abandonded army camp that since 1836 had been located in Christianshavn as part of Copenhagen's defensive system of fortress ramparts. Slowly, but consistently hundreds of people with 'alternative' ideas, mostly young 'hippies', moved into the 150 stone houses of the former baraks. One by one. Later, well into 1972, the squatters used the term christianites, 'christianitter', seeing themselves as citicens of Christiania.


Viktor's friend Kim, "Fisker-Kim", introduced hippie journalist Jacob to the "the forbidden land".
Jacob Ludvigsen already knew about the place to become Christiania from his time as a journalist for Ekstrabladet, a major daily newspaper in Denmark. In 1969 Jacob and Ernst Nielsen, press photographer, in a small news story mentioned the land of an abandonded army camp in the middle of Copenhagen.

And wow! It happened. An utopian idea did become reality.

Once, for 300 years - from 1624 untill 1924 - Christiania was the name of the capitol of Norway, Oslo.
Untill 1814 Norway and Denmark were united in one kingdom. 1814-1905 Norway and Sweden were united.
