23-year-old Newsom and 21-year-old Christian were on a date when they were carjacked by Letalvis Cobbins and several others, beaten, sexual assaulted, and killed. Newsom was shot in the back of the head and set on fire. Christian was choked, wrapped in plastic bags, and dumped in a trashcan.
Although Cobbins admitted to helping with the carjacking and raping Christian, he denies killing either victim. According to the
AP, experts testified that Newsom was killed with the gun of another one of the attackers and Cobbins said he saw his brother choke Christian.
Cobbins brother,
Lemaricus Davidson, has been identified as the ringleader of the attack.
George Thomas and Vanessa Coleman were also involved. They all await trial. Eric Boyd is serving a federal sentence for being an accessory.
