Natalie Wood Death Investigation Reopened

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has reopened the investigation into the death of Natalie Wood. Wood died 30 years ago on November 28, at the age of 43, after celebrating Thanksgiving at home, then sailing to Catalina Island on the yacht she shared with husband Robert Wagner. Wood’s sister, Lana, requested in 2010 that the case be reopened. After new information was recently offered, the Sheriff’s Department agreed the case was worth revisiting.

There has been great mystery surrounding Wood’s death since her body was found floating in the sea, far from the yacht. Her death was ruled an accidental drowning based on several pieces of evidence, including scratch marks on the rubber dinghy that was associated with the yacht–this led the coroner to believe that she had fallen overboard and was struggling to climb into the small boat. Wood had several glasses of wine earlier in the evening, and was found to be intoxicated. No one could determine why she had left the yacht, but it was thought to possibly secure the dinghy.

There were also reports of someone calling for help that evening, yet it was never determined if the individual was Wood. The Wagners had sailed to Catalina with Christopher Walken–Wood’s co-star in Brainstorm. The three were on board, as well as the boat’s skipper.

When Wood’s body was found, she was wearing a down jacket over a nightgown, as well as a pair of socks.

The inside of the story was the argument that ensued before Wood’s death. The Hollywood rumor mill suggested jealousy issues involving Wagner and his feelings toward Christopher Walken.

The skipper of the boat, Dennis Davern, has stated that he believes her death was directly associated to the argument that occurred. The accounts of the evening according to Davern and Wagner have never matched. It would certainly be interesting to hear the accounts of Davern, Wagner and Walken all these years later.

The LA County Sheriff’s Department has not divulged the new information–it could be legitimate, it could be a publicity play due to the upcoming 30th anniversary of the Hollywood stars death.
