Major League Baseball: The Cincinnati Reds

Major League Base Ball: The Cincinnati Reds

It's the middle of February, the Super Bowl is history , now is the time to turn our thoughts to America's favorite past time ,baseball, it has become as traditional as apple pie and mom. One of America's oldest sports, baseball continues to be a favorite year after year.

Many would argue the American base ball tradition began in Cincinnati Ohio. The first major league team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings have continuously played there since 1869. One of the few major league teams to still play in their city of origin, they have a long and rich tradition.

In one of the darker periods of baseball, the Red Stockings played the Chicago White Sox, who were dubbed the Black Sox because several players had been bribed to throw the World Series.

The first stadium the Reds played in was named Union Grounds, located next to Union Station, they played there for two years 1869 and 1870. After that they moved up the road a couple of miles to  Avenue Grounds in which they dwelled from 1876 thru 1879. 1884 thru 1901 saw them performing at League Park where a covered grandstand and leather seats were featured.
In  1902 a fire destroyed League Park, the facility that replaced it was called Palace of the Fans as it featured an illustrious grandstand with hand carved pillars and columns  and 19 fashion boxes, much like opera boxes, and inexpensive field level seating. From 1912 until 1970 their home was Crosley Field where the first major league night game was played on May 24th 1935. I can remember Crosley Field , the most popular feature was it had a pole in front of every seat.

In 1970  , the Reds moved to River Front Stadium  and with the success of "The Big Red Machine" they enjoyed their greatest years as a franchise. With the likes of Johnny Bench, Pete Rose, Dave Conception,Tony Perez, Joe Morgan and others they dominated baseball during much the 70s. Moving onto the Great American Ballpark in 2003, their continued success and links to tradition will continue for many years to come.
