Cindy Sheehan Hopes to Take Down Pelosi

Remember Cindy Sheehan?  She made international news in 2005 when she camped outside President Bush's Crawford, Texas ranch for four weeks to protest the Iraq War.  Her grievances against the war were indeed personal: son Casey had been killed in Iraq in April 2004.

Sheehan is still a vehement activist; in 2007 she officially withdrew from the Democratic Party after Congress passed a bill authorizing more funding for the war.  She announced her intention to run for the US House seat of California's 8th Congressional District (San Francisco), citing incumbent Nancy Pelosi's failure to attempt presidential impeachment as grounds for her dismissal as House Speaker.  While Sheenan lives outside the 8th district in Dixon, California, she needs only be a California resident to take the position.

On August 8, 2008, Sheehan collected enough signatures--10, 198--to qualify for a position on the ballot.  She's running as a Green Party candidate with a "People Before Politics" platform.  According to her campaign website, Sheehan supports the following:
  • repealing "free trade" agreements
  • single-payer healthcare and affordable housing
  • immigrant workers' rights
  • repealing the No Child Left Behind Act
  • regulation of the media
  • nationalization of oil and electricity
  • stopping privatization
  • repealing the Patriot Act
It may be a steep climb for Sheehan: Pelosi has represented the 8th District since 1987.  Do you think Sheehan stands a chance in the upcoming election?  Take our poll.
