Emirates is ready to fly into Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s indigenous aviation industry has been uncertain at best, underscored by Air Zimbabwe grounding its entire fleet last month. Even if the carrier resumes services, its future is not guaranteed.

On 1st February 2012 Emirates plans to operate schedule flights five times weekly service via Lusaka, Zambia on Airbus A330-200s operating Dubai-Lusaka-Harare-Lusaka-Dubai.

The entry into Zimbabwe by international carrier Emirates and the increased number of flights to Zimbabwean destinations by South African Airways will avert a near-collapse of the local aviation sector, economists and analysts say, as the Air Zimbabwe has failed to return to full operation.

Global aviation market intelligence organisation Centre for Aviation says Emirates flights linking Zimbabwe, Zambia and the UAE would provide Zimbabwe with its first link to the Middle East that could then open lines to new trading partners in the Gulf and beyond. Tourism, which relies heavily on a strong and vibrant aviation sector, is projected to rebound on the back of this development.

South African Airways (SAA) has also increased its flights frequency in Zimbabwe by introducing a daily 222-seat Airbus A330-200 flight connecting Johannesburg and Harare.

Economist Onias Manyunga said the international and regional airline operators applied for their licences long before Air Zimbabwe’s problems worsened. While Emirates will be able to carry local traffic between Harare and Lusaka because of the open skies agreement that UAE and Zambia signed in 2009 according to agreement Emirates have access of fifth-freedom flights. The Dubai-Lusaka-Harare service will provide Zimbabwe with its first link to the Middle East that could then open lines to new trading partners in the Gulf and beyond.
