Viola Davis’ thigh-high slit was a sexy surprise. Elle Macpherson (aka The Body) killed it in Zac Posen and Paula Patton stunned in illuminating yellow. And although we normally do our celebrity fashion recaps at the end of the week,While there was no dominant trend, high necklines, belts and the perennial fishtail were a common sight. Embellishments came mainly in the form of beading, often sequins or pearls.we will make an exception to pick out our favorite- and least-favorite looks of the night.

Here’s our top 10 best dressed from this year’s Golden Globes. Vote for your favourite in our poll or jump on the comments and let us know who we missed out.

In no particular order (however we had to start with one of the night’s biggest winners–Octavia Spencer), here’s a look at our favorite fashion moments of the evening. Who do you think looked the best?

1. CLAIRE DANES

For the second year running, Claire Danes was a picture of polished perfection. Last year it was Calvin Klein, this year it was a J. Mendel gown – a classic cut in basic black and white with detailing at the shoulders and waist.

A beautifully constructed dress that, at times, may have been a bit more revealing up top than Danes intended. But the low-cut back (see below) made it an absolute winner.

With the image of Michelle Williams’ Critics’ Choice Chanel still fresh in our minds, our first glance at Claire Danes in this black and white J. Mendel involved a raised eyebrow. But upon further examination, while there are parallels between the two black and white dresses, each is chic in its own right, and the latticed glitter-ombre open back of Claire’s dress adds a bit of whimsy and modernity to the high neck and long lines.

2.KATE WINSLET

The always elegant Winslet did not disappoint in this Jenny Packham black and white gown. The voluptuous actress attended the star studded event at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards. She accentuated her curves with a gown by Jenny Packham. She completed her ensemble with a pair of Roger Vivier shoes and accessories by Freid Leighton.

3. Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace

Angelina actually looked like she might pass out at any second on the Golden Globes red carpet, but there’s no denying her white Atelier Versace gown with a crimson bodice suited her perfectly. She is and always will be a one of a kind beauty! It’s great to see Jolie forgo her favoured muted gowns and subtle cuts to embrace Old Hollywood glamour.Personally, she doesn’t do much for me. I don’t know what my problem is, right? But Angelina was stunning in this white Versace gown with red accents. It was classy and familiar.

4. Evan Rachel

Evan Rachel Wood brought out all the stops for the 2012 Golden Globe Awards tonight. In a sequined Gucci dress with real feathers on the bottom of the skirt, she looked like a cross between a mermaid and a bird … in a good way.The ‘Mildred Place’ actress wore a custom Gucci Première halter neck gown.

Her midnight green dress is embroidered with overlapping fish scale paillettes and ostrich plumes, graduating into a full skirt of iridescent feathers was teamed with black peep-toes.

Only Evan can pull off this look with such grace. It might not be to everyone’s personal taste, but you have to agree she’s totally working it.

A Judith Lieber clutch completed the look.

5. Sofia Vergara

Sofia Vergara arrives at the 2012 Warner Bros. and InStyle Golden Globe After Party at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.Perfect fit, perfect color, just perfect. Sure, she couldn’t walk very easily in it. But being best dressed sometimes means sacrificing mobility. This gal can seriously do no red carpet wrong in our opinion. Sofia is wearing a custom Vera Wang peacock strapless mermaid gown with Harry Winston chandelier earrings, and looks uber glam. Love the cinched in at the knees look and the feathering on the bottom of the dress. This is allegedly the first time Sofia has worked out in the lead up to an awards show. So jelly of her.

6. Lea Michele

Lea Michele took to the red carpet for the 2012 Golden Globe Awards this evening. Here’s Lea doing one of her standard over the top red carpet poses, looking like she’s dressed in a combination of tin foil and spray paint. The dress is Marchesa.

It should come as no surprise that Lea chose Marchesa for the event.

She wore an antique embroidered illusion dress from the Spring 2012 collection. The feather-like appliqués is the focus point of this look, before it glides down into a slinky liquid skirt.Smouldering eye makeup and a messy bun complete the look.Oh Lea this really isn’t a ballroom dancing competition! 25 year old Lea Michele looks completely lost in this silver Marchesa illusion gown. There is just way too much going on. She is still a beautiful gal of course… but sometimes less is more.

Glee’s Lea Michele is really earning a reputation as a fashion maven. The Golden Globes was no exception with her dramatic Marchesa gown.

“Such an amazing night! Thank you to Marchesa for designing this gorgeous dress for me for tonight!!!” she tweeted after the show. We thank you too, Marchesa.

The Glee star is fast becoming a pro at red carpet dressing and last night’s stunner proved she knows how to make a statement – and what a killer body she has! Wearing a silver metallic Marchesa number, Ms Michele dazzled while flashing the flesh. But the ensemble has divided opinion over on our Facebook page where Sara Reid argued she looks ‘too tarty’ and ‘too hard’. What’s your verdict?

7. Charlize Theron

A look at Charlize Theron as she walked the red carpet at the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, California on January 15th, 2012. Her makeup was by Shane Paish for Dior. “The look was all about polished, effortless glamour,” said Paish.

One of our favorite dresses of the evening and the clear winner was Ms. Charlize Theron. She walked as if she was floating on air and it was just the most angelic dress on the carpet.

Charlize Theron wins our pick for best dressed of the night, hands down. The Snow White and the Huntsman stunner picked a pale pink dress from Dior for the show, complete with a plunging neckline and mile-high slit. Our favorite part? Her sparkly headband. Love, love, love!

8. Jessica Alba

It’s seriously not fair that women like Jessica Alba exist. The actress wowed in a Gucci gown at the Golden Globes — and look at that body! We’d never guess she just had a baby a few months ago if we didn’t already know.Jessica looks stunning in this pale lavender bejewelled gown. If there was a MILF award, her and Miranda Kerr would be our top two universal contenders. Jessica walked the red carpet with hubby Cash Warren.

9. Michelle Williams

A look at Elle Macpherson as she walked the red carpet at the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, California on January 15th, 2012.

She’s one of the most famous supermodels in the world who has her pick of stunning gowns to choose from when she hits the red carpet at various events.

So it’s no wonder that Elle Macpherson decided to showcase not one, but two, incredible outfits as she attended last night’s Golden Globe awards.

The 47-year-old model shone as she arrived at the ceremony wearing a show-stopping Zac Posen cream corseted gown, which featured layers and layers of tulle underskirt.

alking about the dress, Elle said: ‘I need a driver’s license to wear it. I have a hard time driving it.

‘It would be hard for a less experienced woman to wear it!’

But the gown didn’t stop Elle shining as she took to the stage with Ashton Kutcher to present the award for Best Actress in a Television Comedy Series to Laura Dern for Enlightened.

Elle Macpherson may just be aging backwards. The supermodel stunner arrived at the Golden Globe Awards showing off her enviable figure in a body-hugging Zac Posen gown. Piping and detailing at the bodice highlighted her form, while a fishtailed tulle train amped up the drama — but she didn’t hold back on accessories either. To finish, Elle went bold with oversized gold earrings, voluminous waves, Kotur box clutch, and an armful of colorful diamond-encrusted bracelets. How do you think she did?

10. Busy Philipps

Actress Busy Philipps arrives at The Weinstein Company’s 2012 Golden Globe Awards After Party at The Beverly Hilton hotel on January 15, 2012 in Beverly Hills, California.

Busy Philipps (aka Michelle Williams’s Golden Globes date) channelled a ’60s bombshell-meets-flapper-girl vibe on the red carpet. The actress opted for a fringed asymmetrical gown, teamed with major drop earrings, bracelets, and a metallic clutch to further the vintage-glamour-meets-glamazon feel. Do you love it?
