About a month ago, I had the opportunity to present the I'm The Boss Coaching System to a local community group. After the talk, an audience member angrily stormed up to me and said:
That purpose and passion stuff is a bunch of crap. I've been unemployed for a year. The unemployment checks have stopped and now I'm about to lose my home. There are a lot of things I want to do, but I don't have time for that. I need to be able to pay my bills.
This comment didn't surprise me. In fact, it's something I get asked about quite a lot. How do you pursue your life's dream when you can't even provide for the basic necessities of life?
The issue is that many people fail to recognize the importance of financial security in a balanced and healthy life. When you are not able to provide for the basic necessities of life, determining your passion becomes a luxury you can't afford.
My advice to the woman, and to you if you find yourself in a similar situation is:
Survive. Your focus right now should be on providing security for yourself and your family. If you don't have a roof over your head and can't buy food to eat, it won't really matter if you?ve found your purpose. Take the next couple of days to find a job (ANY job) to pay your bills and get caught up. Don't be picky right now - it's survival time. Take a job that may be below your previous pay scale and rank. Don't even think about your passion right now.
Develop a Structure. After a couple of months in the stabilization process, you should have some breathing room. Now, it's time to develop a structure to make sure you can maintain your financial stability. Begin to read books by financial experts. I recommend books by Dave Ramsey, Suze Orman, or David Bach. Each of them has a system you can use to develop a budget and long-term financial plan. Develop an emergency fund and start saving.
Succeed. Now it's time to focus on developing your passion. The first two steps could take a few months or a year. Take your time and don't rush the process. With stability and a structure, you now have a solid foundation from which you can build your future. What will be so amazing at this time is that you'll probably find that the time you spent stabilizing and structuring actually strengthened your talents and abilities. The previous two steps may have revealed new interests and given you a broader perspective of your life's purpose. Your passion will be much easier to uncover and develop.
As you follow these three steps, remember to take your time. You don't have to rush the process. Every step you take in the stabilization and structuring phases is critical to you ultimate life success.
