For just a third-round pick, Claude Wroten has been pretty underwhelming. That’s because he had first-round talent coming out of LSU but plummeted because of a failed drug test at the combine which came on the heels of an arrest for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute (the charges were dropped).
The Rams thought they were getting a steal by selecting Wroten. Before the additions of La’Roi Glover and Adam Carriker, Wroten was supposed to be their savior at defensive tackle. But his first-round talent wasn’t evident as a rookie, and he missed the first four games of this season for … surprise! … violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. But he’s back, and he insists — no, really — that he’s walking the sober line, and ready to contribute.
I don’t doubt Wroten’s ability, but defensive tackles, more than any other position, need to be motivated to succeed. Many talented tackles have failed because of a lack of motor. And I’m certainly an advocate for the medicinal and recreational uses of marijuana, but failing a drug test at the combine is the height of stupidity, and apparently losing millions of dollars wasn’t enough to jar him. Before Wroten proves he can help the Rams on the field, he’ll have to prove he’s mature enough to handle it.
