The definition of Autotune is simple. It's a proprietary audio processor that uses a phase vocoder to correct pitch in vocal and instrumental performances. Easy right?

Artists have been relying more and more on this little shortcut since Cher made it mainstream with 1998's "Believe." Then Kid Rock hopped on the tractor and brought us his song "Only God Knows Why" which was laced with autotune freakishness. Soon to follow were tons of rappers, singers and musicians who had all found a way to lay down a Top 40 single all while barely getting out of bed.

Now in the wake of Kanye West's "808s and Heartbreak's" completely autotuned monstrosity, it looks like the music biz has finally had enough. Last week Jay-Z took the airwaves with his single "D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)" and hot on his trail are Wyclef Jean and Nick Cannon (Ms. Mariah Carey).

Their new single, "Mr. Autotune," makes sure we all truly understand that these sneaky tricks might generate a hit single for the moment but will never substitute for raw talent. Here is a sample lyric to give you a sniff at what they are cooking: "But if they ever ask you to sing live / don't sing accapella."
