Randy Ready, who remains a candidate to become manager of the Houston Astros, is one of six coaches agreeing to contracts to return to the San Diego Padres' staff. Padres manager Bud Black said Thursday that if Ready doesn't get the Astros job, he'll be back with the Padres. Ready was named Padres hitting coach on July 31 to replaced the fired Jim Lefebvre. Ready had been managing Triple-A Portland at the time. Also agreeing to one-year contract extensions were bench coach Ted Simmons, pitching coach Darren Balsley, first base coach Rick Renteria, third base coach Glenn Hoffman and bullpen coach Darrel Akerfelds. Gerardo Parra doubled in the go-ahead runs, Brandon Allen and Ryan Roberts homered and the last-place Arizona Diamondbacks rallied to beat the Colorado Rockies 7-5 Friday night, sending the NL wild card leaders to their fifth loss in six games. With the score tied at 4 and two outs in the seventh, Parra hit a deep fly down the right field line. After a long run, Brad Hawpe gloved the ball but dropped it before running into the fence, allowing two runs to score. Troy Tulowitzki homered for the third straight game for the Rockies, who entered with a 3 1/2 game lead over ... Read Full Story

Pumped-up Brad Penny dazzled in his home debut and Juan Uribe homered twice, tripled and drove in five runs as the San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres 9-4 on Monday. Uribe and Edgar Renteria hit back-to-back home runs, helping the Giants remain two games back of the Rockies in the NL wild-card race. Colorado beat Cincinnati. Penny (2-0) didn't give up a hit until Will Venable's triple leading off the fifth. The Padres certainly didn't want a repeat of Jonathan Sanchez's improbable no-hitter against them here on July 10. Penny struck out six and walked one over seven innings in his first ... Read Full Story

Who are you guys and what have you done with the San Diego Padres ? It didn't matter that their manager and starting catcher had been tossed on Memorial Day, the Padres found a way to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-7 and stretch their out-of-the-blue winning streak to ten games. One big hit after another was capped by a 10th-inning Chase Headley two-run rip that helped his team rally from a six-run deficit with just two innings to play. Snapping an 11-game road losing streak, the Pads trailed 7-1 before scoring five in the eighth, one in the ninth and two more in extra ... Read Full Story

Aaron Cook pitched six solid innings, Clint Barmes hit a three-run homer and Seth Smith added a two-run shot to lead the Colorado Rockies to a 10-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Thursday night. AP Photo White Sox GM Kenny Williams always seems to have some deal in the works, so it's no surprise that the Sox are involved in some of the early trade chatter during the off-season. His boldest move last season was landing Jake Peavy from the cash-strapped San Diego Padres, and he might use the Padres' financial situation to try to land another of their star players. Preliminary talks suggest a three-way trade which would send Sox...
